Welcome to the Unity Chapel Home Page. It is devoted to the family of Richard and Mary Lloyd-Jones their ancestors and descendents, and to those interested in them.
Richard, Mary, and seven of their children (Thomas, John, Mary, Margaret (H)anna, Nany (who died that first winter in NY) and Jenkin) came in 1844 to America from a farm near Llandyssul, Wales, and settled near Ixonia, Wisconsin. Shortly before the Civil War, they moved like an Old Testament tribe to the Wyoming Valley, near Spring Green Wisconsin, and established seven farms and, later, Unity Chapel and Hillside Home School. The Chapel was planned in 1886 on the direction of the Reverend Jenkin Lloyd Jones, a son of the family who was also a prominent Unitarian minister in Chicago. The designer of record was Joseph Silsbee, who had designed buildings for Jenkin in Chicago, and a draughtsman assigned to the job was Jenkin's nephew, Frank Lloyd Wright. The Chapel remains a focal point for the scattered family and a local resource for religious and artistic functions in the Valley. Some family members reassemble each year to open and close the Chapel and to generally take care of the building . Every five years the entire family gathers in reunion to sustain the family spirit. We have tried to maintain a complete family genealogy from early days in Wales to the present, but it always needs improvement. Since the family is scattered and people move frequently, some names and addresses have been lost. We like to include in our gatherings those people who by an act of will like to think of themselves as Lloyd-Joneses.
